Dormer\'s range of versatile thread milling cutters support the production of high quality internal threads in most materials.
Thread Milling is a method of producing a thread with a milling operation via a CNC machine capable of making circular paths (spiral interpolation). Numerous benefits compared to conventional threading include:
• Same tool can be used to produce numerous thread diameters (as long as the pitch is the same)• Same tool can be used for both left and right hand thread production and G(BSP) can be used to create both internal and external threads• Smaller chips, promoting problem free threading and reduced down-time• Tolerance adjustments can be made using exact calculations• Full thread to the bottom of the hole• Very secure method of creating threads in difficult to machine materials
It is a relatively slow process offering measurable time savings on larger diameters, but with significantly higher quality of finish and accuracy.

Dormer\'s threading range supports four primary tap geometries and tapping processes:
• Straight Flute Taps: the most commonly used type of tap. Suitable for blind or though hole thread production in most materials, mainly steel and cast iron.• Spiral Point Taps: recommended for threading through holes, these taps feature a straight, fairly shallow flute with a point designed to drive the swarf forward. Also known as gun nose taps. • Spiral Flute Taps: intended primarily for threading blind holes, the helical flute transports swarf back out of the hole• Forming Taps: produce a thread by deformation of the component material rather than the traditional cutting action. This means that no swarf is produced and the resultant thread is stronger. Forming taps can be used for production of blind or through holes in most material types. Also known as roll taps or fluteless taps.
Additional types available include interrupted thread taps, serial taps, nut taps, combination drill-taps and wire insert taps.
Dormer also offers a range of dies (gun nosed & adjustable) and dienuts for the production of external screw threads.
Dormer’s threading ranges are identified by the following product codes:
• E*** (HSS, HSS-E & HSS-E-PM Taps)• F*** (HSS & HSS-E Dies & dienuts) • L*** (Die stocks, tap wrenches & tap sets)• T*** (HM Taps)
Solid Drills RangeWe offer a wide range of solid drilling tools under the Dormer brand with substrates, lengths and styles to suit almost every rotary hole-making application:
- Lengths: options to suit drilling depths up to 20xD, ranging from stub (short), jobber (standard), long series and extra length.
- Material: High Speed Steel (HSS), High Speed Cobalt (M35/M42) and Solid Carbide (HM)
- Geometries: a number of different geometries are available to account for the cutting behaviour of the workpiece. This covers a range of capabilities and uses, from general purpose to high performance drills and, also, from drills suitable for use in multiple materials to drills designed for specific materials or applications, including micro drills and deep hole drills.
Our solid drilling range is split into two main areas, defined by the substrate of the drill:
- A*** (HSS & HSS-E Drills)
- R*** (Solid Carbide Drills)
We provide a versatile program of rotary milling cutters under the Dormer brand covering almost every engineering material and application.
Within the range we offer five basic types of shank cutters in High Speed Steel (HSS), High Speed Cobalt (HSS-E & HSS-E PM) and Solid Carbide (HM) to cover a variety of milling operations:
• Two flute slot drills: made to close diameter tolerance for milling of keyways, slots and pockets• Three flute slot drills: offer a versatile option between 2 and 4 flute cutters with the ability to profile as well as produce slots and pockets • Four-flute / multi-flute end mills: used primarily for profiling operations with low-medium metal removal rates, offering superior surface finish quality• Ball nosed cutters: for profile milling and contouring of complex surfaces• Roughing end mills: for high metal removal applications
Additional cutter types available include T-slot cutters, woodruff cutters, dovetail cutters and corner rounding cutters. We also offer Carbide Thread Milling Cuttersto support thread production with a milling operation.
Dormer\'s solid milling range is split into three main areas:
• C*** HSS, HSS-E & HSS-E-PM Cutters
• D*** HSS & HSS-E Side & Face Milling Cutters, Shell End Mills and Slitting Saws• S*** HM (Solid Carbide) Cutters
Our indexable turning range includes a selection of three edged, Cobalt alloyed High Speed Steel (HSS-E) parting off tools, supplied under the Dormer brand.
These are available in bright finish, with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating or a Titanium Aluminium Nitride (TiAlN) coating.
The sides of the inserts are hollow ground, which means the clearance will be correct radially as well as axially.
A chip breaker has been shaped in the cutting surface of the edge in order to achieve the best possible chip type when working in long-chipping materials.
The inserts are available in two sizes – 23mm or 40mm - with neutral (0°), 8° or 15° lead angles, in both left and right hand versions.
Inserts for standard retaining ring size grooves, with widths of 1.1, 1.3, 1.6, 1.85 and 2.15mm, are also available.
Dormer’s HSS-E parting off range is identified by the following product codes:
• K1** (Toolholders)• K2** (Spare parts for toolholders)• K30* (bright finish inserts)• K31* (TiN coated inserts)• K33* (TiAlN coated inserts)

We offer a comprehensive range of Dormer branded hand and machine reamers to support production of dimensionally accurate holes up to H7 tolerance. Our reamers are classified into 3 main types:
• Solid: available in two shank types – straight (cylindrical) - either with or without square, and, Morse Taper• Shell: for use on arbors• Expanding: with adjustable HSS blades and used for light work
The most common types of reamers have a left-hand spiral due to the cutting forces involved and low depths of cut. This is a proven geometry to provide a high quality surface finish and hole accuracy.Straight flute reamers are also available for hard and abrasive workpiece materials. In addition, we manufacture a range of Countersinks for chamfering and countersinking holes. Dormer’s countersink range includes a variety of substrates, coatings and shank options to suit the majority of applications:
